Arborist for Schools, Universities & Education Sites NSW — Annual Tree Risk Cycles, Aerial Inspections & Capital Works Supervision
School and education sites carry a tree-risk profile most owners don’t have: large mature trees, fixed daily presence of children, playgrounds and walkways under canopy, decades of soil compaction, and an insurance / WHS / parental scrutiny environment that doesn’t tolerate the “we didn’t know” answer. Our principal consultant is an AQF Level 5 Consulting Arborist with ISA TRAQ certification — the framework that produces defensible, audit-ready risk ratings and recommended actions. We run annual and biannual TRA cycles for schools across NSW, with aerial inspections, decay testing and stability assessments in-house when a specific tree question needs a deeper answer.
ISA TRAQ · AQF5 climbs · From $800 + GST per siteSchool sites get a risk profile that most owners don’t have to manage — and the documentation has to hold up to insurance, WHS and parental scrutiny
Mature trees on school sites collide with three things that no other built environment combines as densely: fixed daily presence of children, infrastructure underneath the canopy (covered walkways, playground equipment, parked cars, sheds, classroom roofs, sports fields used at recess), and decades of soil compaction and disturbance from foot traffic, vehicle access, capital works projects and routine maintenance. The combination produces tree failures that other settings don’t see at the same rate — and the consequence-of-failure when a child or staff member is present makes the risk calculation different.
The right response isn’t “remove everything that might fail.” It’s defensible risk-rated assessment: a documented, methodology-cited TRA programme using the ISA TRAQ framework that identifies which trees actually carry meaningful risk, what the remedial action is, and what the inspection cycle should be. That documentation is what stands up when the insurer asks, when WHS audits, when a parent calls. We run these programmes for NSW Schools Infrastructure, Catholic Schools, independent schools and TAFEs across NSW — annual and biannual cycles, per-site fixed-fee, audit-ready output.
Where schools & education sites engage us
- “Our insurer wants a documented tree risk assessment programme” — the dominant engagement. ISA TRAQ-framework Tree Risk Assessment on annual or biannual cycle, per-site fixed-fee from $800 + GST, with the asset-register documentation insurers and WHS audits actually want to see.
- “There’s a specific tree near the playground / classroom / car park we’re worried about” — single-site TRA or, where the question is whether internal decay is present, an IML Resistograph decay test for measured (not estimated) evidence of internal wood condition.
- “The canopy of a large tree needs a close-up inspection (defects, deadwood, attachments)” — in-house Aerial Inspections. AQF5 who still climbs — the same arborist who writes the report does the inspection.
- “A large tree is showing canopy decline / lean / suspect root issues and we need a defensible stability call” — Tree Stability Assessment using Wessolly SIA Static Pull Test methodology and tree-motion sensor monitoring, AQF5-directed with specialist partner operators for the on-day field equipment.
- “We’re doing a capital works project on a school site and the DA requires an arborist” — AIA for the lodgement and Project Arborist for on-site supervision during construction. Licensed Builder credential matters here — the recommendations don’t conflict with the construction program.
- “We need habitat trees retained or replaced under a DA condition” — Habitat Creation service: carved hollows, salvaged habitat features, nest boxes. AQF5 specifies AND climbs to install.
- “Elm Leaf Beetle / scale / pest pressure on heritage trees on school grounds” — Stem Injection Treatments (Bayer Silvashield etc.) deliver pest control without spraying over a school environment.
Annual / biannual programme = the typical engagement. Most school programmes settle into a regular cycle — one inspection per year (full TRA refresh), or two per year (a primary TRA + a between-cycle walkthrough). We design the cadence to match your insurer’s requirements and your asset-management policy.
The seven services we deliver into schools & education
Tree Risk Assessments
The annual / biannual cycle deliverable. ISA TRAQ-framework risk assessment across the whole school site, per-site fixed-fee from $800 + GST. Audit-ready documentation: tree inventory, likelihood-and-consequence rating, recommended remedial action, inspection cycle, signed AQF5 sign-off. Insurance and WHS-grade output.
From $800 + GST per site · 1–2 weeks
TRA detailsAerial Inspections
Close-canopy inspection from a climbed inspection — defect search, deadwood mapping, attachment assessment, post-storm damage. For trees where the canopy is high enough that ground-based assessment can’t see the structural detail. AQF5 who still climbs — same person who writes the report does the inspection.
Quoted on scope · Same-week mobilisation
Aerial Inspection detailsDecay Testing
Quantified internal-decay evidence using the in-house IML Resistograph. For trees where the TRA flags possible decay (cavities, hollow sounds, conks, wounding history). The “measured not estimated” report — residual wall thickness, decay extent, structural retention recommendation. No third-party scheduling.
Quoted on scope · Same-week mobilisation
Decay Testing detailsTree Stability Assessments
Wessolly SIA Static Pull Test methodology and tree-motion sensor monitoring for high-value trees where the question is whether the tree can stand the wind loads at its current condition. AQF5 directs the methodology, interprets the data and writes the report; specialist partner operators provide the on-day field equipment. Used where canopy decline, lean, or suspect root condition makes the retention call non-trivial.
Quoted on scope
Stability detailsProject Arborist (capital works)
For new buildings, ovals, car parks, accessibility upgrades on school sites: AQF5 on-site supervision under the DA consent conditions. Licensed Builder credential means the recommendations don’t conflict with the construction program. Often paired with the in-cycle TRA — same arborist already familiar with the site.
Fixed-fee on scope, day rate or hourly rate · quoted on supervision frequency
Project Arborist detailsHabitat Creation
Carved hollows, salvaged habitat features, nest box installs for DA conditions on school capital works projects — and for biodiversity / environmental education programmes (gliders, owls, microbats become curriculum content). AQF5 specifies AND climbs to install.
From $2,000 + GST single small install
Habitat detailsStem Injection Treatments
Bayer Silvashield (imidacloprid) and similar systemic treatments delivered by trunk injection for Elm Leaf Beetle, scale and other pest pressure on heritage / specimen trees. Treats the tree without spraying over a school environment — significant WHS and parental-acceptance advantage over canopy spray approaches.

Insurance / WHS / audit-grade documentation
The ISA TRAQ framework produces risk-rated, methodology-cited, signed AQF5 output. Insurers, WHS auditors and parental scrutiny all respect the methodology — it’s the published international framework for tree risk assessment, not an in-house opinion. Reports are structured for the asset-register, the insurance file and the WHS register simultaneously.
AQF5 who still climbs — aerial in-house
Most consulting arborists either don’t climb anymore or never did — meaning aerial inspections get sub-contracted to a separate operator, with the report-writer working from someone else’s photographs. We deliver aerial inspections in-house: the same AQF5 who writes the report does the climb. Significantly better defect detection on tall canopies.
In-house Resistograph + Stability + Injection — one engagement
When the TRA flags a specific tree question, the follow-up tools are all under the same accountable AQF5: IML Resistograph for decay (in-house), Pull Test / TMS for stability (AQF5-directed, partner-operated), stem injection for pest pressure (in-house). Reduced fragmentation across the engagement — the TRA, the deeper test and the remedial action all sit under one consultant rather than a chain of separately-engaged specialists.
Multi-site school operator? Diocese, university campus group, TAFE network?
We design multi-site programmes around your asset-management cadence — rolling annual TRA cycles across multiple campuses, with consolidated reporting, common formatting and a single accountable AQF5. Quoted on the portfolio rather than per-site.
Tree work needed after the inspection?
Where the TRA recommends remedial pruning, removal or stabilisation works, our Tree Works Management service coordinates qualified contractors under our AQF5 supervision — with the compliance certificate for your file. Single point of accountability from the inspection to the works to the close-out.

Schools & education FAQs
How often should our school have a tree risk assessment?
Most school programmes run annual or biannual cycles. Annual is the typical baseline for sites with mature trees and routine high-use canopy areas. Biannual (twice per year) is appropriate where the insurer or asset-management policy specifies it, or where storm season produces enough year-on-year structural change that a single annual pass misses material risk. For very small sites with limited canopy, a 2-yearly cycle can be defensible. The ISA TRAQ framework also produces a per-tree recommended inspection interval — some trees need annual revisit even if the site-wide cycle is biannual.
Will the documentation satisfy our insurer / WHS auditor?
The ISA TRAQ framework is the published international methodology for tree risk assessment — insurers and WHS auditors recognise it as the defensible standard. Reports are structured for the asset register, the insurance file and the WHS register: tree inventory with GPS locations, likelihood-and-consequence risk rating per tree, recommended remedial action, recommended inspection cycle, AQF5 sign-off and ISA TRAQ certification number. If your insurer or auditor has a specific format requirement, we’ll incorporate it at scoping.
Can you do the assessment outside school hours / during holidays?
Yes — the most common arrangement. Most school TRAs are scheduled during student-free days, holidays, or weekends to avoid disruption. We work around your timetable rather than the other way round.
What if you find a tree that needs immediate action?
The TRA reports any tree rated Extreme or High risk with the recommended remedial action and a recommended time window for action (typically 1–3 months for High, immediate for Extreme). For genuinely immediate hazards, we’ll call you on the day rather than waiting for the written report. Where remedial works are needed, our Tree Works Management arm can coordinate qualified contractors under our AQF5 supervision with the compliance certificate for your file.
How do you handle parents’ concerns about specific trees?
Schools sometimes get a parent who’s worried about a specific tree near a classroom, walkway or oval. Where this happens, the TRA either confirms the parent’s concern (and recommends action) or documents why the tree is acceptable to retain — with the methodology, the inspection findings, the risk rating, and the AQF5 signature attached. That’s usually enough to close the question.
Can you do habitat-creation work as part of an environmental curriculum?
Yes — nest boxes and carved hollows can be a useful curriculum hook for schools running biodiversity programmes (gliders, owls, microbats, parrots become visible curriculum content rather than abstract concepts). We can deliver the install with an explainer suitable for student observation, and the close-out report becomes a teaching artefact.
What about heritage trees with Elm Leaf Beetle / pest pressure?
Trunk-injection treatments (Bayer Silvashield etc.) deliver systemic pest control without spraying over school grounds — significant WHS and parental-acceptance advantage. We’ll diagnose the actual pest pressure first (not every defoliating insect needs treatment), then recommend the appropriate treatment if injection is the right answer.
What standards do you work to?
ISA TRAQ (Tree Risk Assessment Qualification) for the risk-assessment framework. AS 4970-2025 (Protection of Trees on Development Sites) for any capital-works engagements. AS 4373 (Pruning of Amenity Trees) for any remedial pruning specifications. Arboriculture Australia Minimum Industry Standards for work-practice baselines. WHS legislation for on-site work.
Defensible documentation. Audit-ready risk ratings. AQF5 sign-off.
Send through your school, the approximate tree count and the insurance / WHS context. We’ll come back within one business day with a scoped quote and the proposed inspection cycle.
